About ncr

love sewing for my dollies, bags, clothes. i also like other crafting like crochet knit needle felting etc.

Finally 2 Set Clothes Done

Finally, managed to finish 2 set of doll clothes. Not yet taking picture. Will be uploaded directly to etsy later. Want to take picture of the other clothes. Perhaps tomorrow. May be I should just go home after dropping my kids at.

The producing speed is very slow. Interfered with many things include having food poisoned. Goodness. Took more than 2 weeks to get all done.

Changing Needle

Again, i forgot to check my sewing needle. When I sew, seems like the tip is not sharp anymore so it damaged the fabric a little bit. Thank goodness, i had a chance to change it so it wouldn’t give damage any further.

Checking the tip of needle and then changing the needle when it’s not too sharp anymore is important

  1. it eases the sewing. Somehow, the fabric can pass the sewing feet easier if we use the correct and GOOD quality of sewing machine needle.
  2. it also prevent the fabric damage. Blunt needles can damage the fibre like pull it. It leaves the fabric with thin lines on the fabric. The lines are formed because of the fibres that supposed to be on that lines are broken or pulled or damaged. In extreme case, it can create ‘wrinkle’ on the fabric.

Even in case of we are using a very good quality of needle, checking is a must and changing can be necessary. Sometimes, a very good quality needle is not broken or seems still sharp but it is not. It’s hard to detect but we will know the nature of the needle after lots of sewing hours.

Rayon Fabric

I used rayon fabric on my new doll clothes. I made quite similar to 1/4 circle skirt. I saw the rayon fabric is also good for 1/4 BJD doll. The fall is better than even thin cotton. Cotton sometimes can be stiff. Rayon is less stiff. I might re-use it on bigger doll. I think, the drape will be looked better. Perhaps, I might try flounce project in the future using the same fabric for BJD scale.

One Head Doll is Weird O.o

I don’t know…other heads are ok…never experience like this before. This AE Doll Head is weird. No body even AE itself looks fine with this head EXCEPT Be Yours body. Yet, I don’t want to put her on BY body(ies) as I used them all for other heads. The head looks fine on the company listing. She’s cute and adorable but somehow, I can’t match her with the bodies at home. The height of the head is like odd so when it is put on a body, the head looks too high. I was just thinking the chin or face part (cheek and so on) is slightly smaller. Should be longer like others.

May be the height of the head is ok but the proportion is odd. The most up part of the head (on which the wig is put on) is ‘high’. I felt it when i put the wig. So, the ‘wig’ place is like slightly bigger and the ‘face’ place is like slightly smaller than usual. May be…that’s why when put on a ‘general’ body, it looks like too high. The neck is like giraffe. Too long for the head.  Perhaps, on BY body, it looks ok because the the length of the neck isn’t as long as other bodies’ neck.

May be the trick is to put long, layered wig to cover the neck and disguise the not proportioned head.

But…i’m too annoyed with this…want to sell but not sure…I will just use it as head wig model. i hope the head is not too odd and the wig i will make using the head can be used by other dolls

Sewing Doll Clothes vs Sewing Human Clothes

I’ve been sewing both type for quite sometime. Specially for doll clothes, may be since late 2009. I realized that sewing techniques for each are different after sometime sewing doll clothes. Human Clothes seamstresses who never sew doll clothes may not understand the adjustment that the doll clothes seamstresses make as well as the difficulties besides the small size. They tend to comment it supposed to be like this and that or but sometimes they don’t really understand what they’re saying.

Doll clothes:

  1. The size make it hard to sew. So, lots of adjustment and off-good sewing-techniques are made to accommodate.
  2. The supplies are difficult. The scale sometimes is still a bit too big for the size of the doll. It makes the clothes look odd on doll. Finding the right scale supplies are not easy. Sometimes, once we find 1 supplies with right scale but another supplies are not with right scale. It can’t be used together. Here, we have to ‘let go’ what is said ‘supposed to’.
  3. The fabric types may add difficulty. Sometimes, we want to use chiffon or some ‘easy fraying’ fabrics. We have to cut the seam edge until very closed to the seam to make the clothes shape more smooth. YET, it risk the sewing itself. Very closed can’t be very closed. Don’t criticize until you experience it. Yes, there’s glue or kind of liquid to prevent fraying BUT it’s not always available in all countries. Yes, there are other technique like burning the edge or heating it with kind of hot-pen, but it may endanger the fabric itself and the quality of result can be varied. The fabric color can change (it can be happened with fraying prevent liquid, too) or it’s temporary (after washing the clothes, it goes back to fraying), and so on. Even if we want to cut with zigzag scissor, it’s not always helping. Sometimes, fraying is fraying. The only way to lock it is with french seam which not always applicable for doll clothes.
  4. We can’t choose whatever fabric we want to. The options are narrowing and not all right fabrics are available in ALL countries. I saw some doll clothes are really good in showing how it flows on the doll body like when human wearing chiffon. I don’t know what kind of fabrics are they. Are they silk? what kind of silk? Are they chiffon? what kind of chiffon? Something like that.  Sometimes we want to create something with this or that impression but we can’t do it 100% right because no fabrics for that in the country. Even if we have to import or want to import, we don’t know what it’s name in other countries.
  5. Finishing for doll clothes and human clothes aren’t always the same either. At least, I don’t do that. I do different things for human and doll clothes finishing.

Sewing human clothes with good and right techniques can be helpful to understand how the clothes should be looked. Then, we apply it to doll scale.

About neatness.

It can be pursued. It is still a must. Even for doll scale, neatness can be pursued. Even after adjustment and those difficulties, neatness can be pursued. Not because doll clothes are difficult, so the neatness is adjust too. Not like that either.

Knitting now

It’s been years may be…i haven’t knitted. I’m taking knitting project because well I don’t know why actually. Haha. Perhaps, because I wanted to crochet but bored with it so I knit. While knitting, i realize something I should do when I was really really newbie to knit. May be, when my mind is sorted well, I will write about it. It’s kind of thoughts before getting deep into knitting, like what knitting needle should one buys, making gauge, stitch calculation, etc.

Finishing Works

I feel a bit regret of piling up un-done clothes so I can finish them all at once. Apparently, getting a time to do it is difficult. It’s better to finish it at the span of time I’m making it. Developing mood to do finishing is even harder than time. It’s a very slow progress. Goodness, and my boys are so naughty lately.

Rubber and Plain Waistband Combination

rubber-combined-plain-waistband

had been learning to sew this technique. This is plain waistband on the front and back and sides are with rubber. It’s actually not difficult but a bit tricky. The technique can be seen here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YP7sWSiADEY&sns=em

In sewing plain waistband, I don’t one detail in the technique that is the position of the interfacing. I don’t place it on the front like when sewing ordinary or usual plain waist band.

Please watch carefully how to sew it as some details are important and if you miss it, it can be a mess (like what i did)…

I didn’t sew it neatly because i was mistaken with usual technique i used, so i missed some details. I pulled off all the seam and repeat but not much space for sewing anymore…haha…so, well, the rubber is a bit seen. Even though it’s seen, it still shows consistency. not like, half length seen, half length hidden. It means, the technique is great. I really didn’t do anything but following the technique correctly after realizing my mistake before. It’s amazing that I just pulled the rubber and hold it and sew it. Well, perhaps didn’t do anything isn’t like ‘anything at all’ either. Haha. I’d practiced it with other technique before so, perhaps, I’m a bit ‘trained to control the rubber and waist band band fabric. But, I’m optimist that it’s not difficult just as long as you have already known how to sew plain waist band properly. Because, if you don’t know how to do it, you might find a difficulty to imagine which part it is and which part that is.

NOTE: THIS IS FOR INTERMEDIATE SKILL OR EVEN IF YOU’RE BASIC, YOU MUST HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SEW PLAIN WAISTBAND PROPERLY (WITH CORRECT AND NEAT SEWING TECHNIQUE).

Sorry, I don’t open comment slot as spam or unrelated comments came in in the past. I have tweeted it. Please find nichancraftroom twitter and mention if you want to ask in english. I might be able to help (my english isn’t too good but I will try my best). As for Indonesian languange, please go to the youtube link and ask directly to mr.Zainal Ali who posted the video.

Jeans Denim Pants Project

i’ve been doing personal project of sewing denim pants…using ‘real’ denim jeans fabric…i mean, not cotton jeans or soft jeans…i use the real thick jeans used on ‘old-school classic jeans’…

apparently, i used ‘wrong’ measurement last time…haha…no wonder, it’s a bit loose and not fit as expected…it is ok…but it’s like when i used size 31, it is size 32…XDXD…goodness…I’m not sure to use the same pattern though i know what the mistakes are now…

i will be back to my teacher’s pattern on next project. I have checked everything. it should be ok…XD…

after this, i’ll be going back to doll project…my target is i have to be able to sew jeans low-waist pants for myself…XD…problem is the R&D projects for my size is not cheap and i always use the suitable fabric, not replacement or other cheaper one. The risk of different result is big while the effort is the same. I’d rather risk my money a bit than effort…my effort is expensive since i have the boys…XDXDXD…

now…cutting the pattern..

How to sew rubber and plain waist band

This tutorial is the best for sewing rubber and plain waist band combination. Not too difficult if you are usual to sewing. It’s all about hand coordination. I think, measuring and deciding how long is the rubber band needed is ‘more’ difficult than sewing it. Not because it’s rubber band, the fitting is guaranteed. If we wrong in measuring it, it can be useless as well as too tight.
